Thursday, February 23rd. Program By Ray Gould
Besides being an avid fly fisherman, fly tier and author, Gould has been very active in serving his community. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1953 with a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering and then worked for Scott Paper Co. in various management positions until retirement in 1989. Gould was appointed three times by the Governor as a Community College Trustee, won election twice as an Edmonds City Councilman, and served as a county planning commissioner. In addition he was named to the Citizen's Oversight Panel for Sound Transit, chaired the Performance Audit Committee for Sound Transit, was a Rotarian for 30 years and a Board member for 1000 Friends of Washington. Recently Gould was selected as a member of the Citizen's Cabinet for Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon.
Somehow he managed to find time to become a fly fishing enthusiast in 1958 when he first visited Glimpse lake B.C., now his favorite spot on earth. Gould is a past President of NFA and has taught fly tying for both the NFA and the Olympic fly clubs.
He began building and repairing bamboo fly rods in 1978 and uses his engineering background to design and build the necessary tools and equipment and also uses computer programs to design his rod tapers. Gould has presented cane rod programs at numerous fly clubs and has exhibited in Washington, Montana and British Columbia. He co-chaired two Bamboo Rod Builder's workshops at Corbett lake British Columbia and has become known for his "double parabolic tapers".
A hallmark in his life has been the publishing of two on cane rod building, the first in 1998 is titled "Constructing Cane Rods: Secrets of the Bamboo Fly Rod", the second published in 2004 is titled: "Cane Rods Tips and Tapers”. He has written a third book published in 2009 titled "Fly Fishing for Kamloops Trout". He has most recently been on a speaking tour of Northwest fly fishing clubs presenting a program about fly fishing in BC.
Gould has received the Dawn Holbrook Memorial Award from the Northwest Fly Anglers club and The Letcher Lambuth Award from The Washington Fly Club.
Gould and his wife Susan (former State Senator) reside in Bothell, Washington and have three children Kevin, Meredith, and LeaAnn.
